East Texas Here!!
« on: July 08, 2015, 02:59:28 PM »

Hello Fellow East Texans! I'm new to the Ham community and only have my Technicians license.
Would love to talk to someone in my neck of the woods, Athens and Tyler areas, about the radio, survival, and Prepping.
If you'd like to talk then definitely give me a shout.

Welcome sir.  What took you so long to post?  Just curious.

We have a few folks here from Texas.

I would encourage you to study for the General and upgrade so you have access to the HF Bands.

I'm in Lamar county here.  We have an active HAM radio club and at least two weekly 2 meter traffic nets here in town that you can participate in and get some air time.  Traffic nets are the main method of organizing communications during emergencies and we use them for most events where there are several of us on the air.  Just last Saturday, we provided communications for the Tour de Paris bicycle rally.  A few of the rural rest stops don't have cell phone coverage, so our work actually makes a difference.  http://wb54dd.org
This year we installed APRS units in the EMT vehicles and a few of the other mobile units and their locations were displayed on APRS.FI in real-time at the convention center headquarters.

In addition to Lamar county, there is an active club in Hopkins county http://k5sst.org which has a weekly traffic net on 2 meters.

Let me know if you need any other information on the traffic nets, etc.
