If you use those cheap china boxes for what they are designed they arent bad HT's.  Trying to make them into something they arent is a mistake  imo

I have no idea what you are talking about.  By adding in the FRS frequencies it is still a two way radio.

Just to report in on progress for the Baofeng UV-5RA FRS frequencies.... Success.   We have been able to edit the channels with CHIRP successfully.  Now to test this out.  FM narrow has been set properly for FRS.

good to here you got the ht working,

did you get the ft2900 working ?
you might want to check out and turn off the BCLO setting
if you have the squelch turned down it will stop you from transmitting

Thanks, yes I got the 2900 talking ok.  Pulled out the FT-60 HT and hit the simplex frequency and both the 2900 and the HT-60 were talking.  The problem was with the Baofeng.  Still haven't had time to resolve that one.    Which brings me to my next request for info....  I need someone familiar with Baofeng and CHIRP.  I opened a new Baofeng today... this time I got the UV-5RAX+ model.  It will download to the CHIRP software but when I try and upload to the new Baofeng it gives a COM3 not found error.  Different firmware?

Go to device manager and make sure COM3 is where your cable is plugged in.

I usually try all the com ports to see what one is connected at the moment,
my version of windows keeps moving it every time I boot up

It has something to do with this new UV-5RAX+.  My UV-5RA still works fine on CHIRP.  Only when I try and communicate with the new one does this happen.  Possible different firmware numbers...

Also, found a way to program 7 digit frequencies manually if anyone else is having a problem.
