Yo, Souh -
I have to say that AD hit on a good choice for a starter radio, but there are others that fit the same mold. It'll do for just about any service that you decide to put it to, base, mobile, portable or whatever. One of the beauties is that it is flexible enough to give you a taste of most of the different things that ham radio can do to arrive at Tevin's suggestion to figure out what you want to specialize in if specialization is a goal. (I mean how do you know ahead of time if (say) digi is fun, or DX is what trips your trigger?) And yep, Tempsar has it right, local is the starting place for learning by listening.
First step, join the ARRL. Second, study up and get a ticket. Conventional wisdom says take the Tech and General tests at the same sitting, gets you operational across more of the ham spectra.
You betcha there are more opinions out there. If it feels good, do it.
