Chaos everywhere!!!!!!
« on: May 14, 2018, 07:53:24 PM »
Volcanoes are blowing all over the place.  Earthquakes are hitting every continent. Our country is becoming divided and then you got the snowflakes and those who are confused.  The Arabs are freaking out over an embassy along with them about to pin-the-tail-on-the-donkeys for taking bribes. There's a psycho dictator thats complying with our president.  :o
There's some really strange things are happening all around us and a lot of our survival Forum boards are dead as a head of a nail.
Don't know about the rest of you, this is starting to bother me just a little bit. Oh did we forget about all the sex going on in our government and extramarital affairs. LMAO!!!!!!!
Trumps the man and the pron star is still just a porn star.  ;D

my world is nothing like the outside world
just watering the garden and hunting gophers

just saying, if you setup your life right, you can avoid all the madness

The same scandals and monkey business have been going on for centuries. Nothing is new, except that now we have the internet to broadcast it all over the place.

As for survival-related forums becoming lonely, I think the problem is there are too many of them. The market is diffused so much that no one website can really command attention. One website I used to be a regular on had over 12,000 active users about five or six years ago. Now it's down to about 4,000. It's not that 8000 people suddenly quit prepping, it's that they moved to another forum. It does not help that this particular forum's moderators are very heavy handed and will "ban" you for the pettiest of offenses.

Another forum I'm familiar with is fairly busy and has a stable user base, but probably 80% of the posts are not survival-related, or are only loosely related. I still hang out there but don't post much because it's drifted off mission and become just another general chat board.

Prepared Ham is my personal favorite. We may not have the most members and the biggest site traffic, but what's here is quality. I guess that's the price you pay for being principled.

Ya, There's allot more traffic on my DRP Facebook page then there is on the main site. I can see there's allot of hits each day, but thats it.  And yes, some of the other forums have so much non prep talk going on, I dont see why they allow it. They start some of the most non common sense question iv ever seen.

I considered starting social media accounts for my Off Grid Ham website but ultimately decided against it because A) I'm not a big fan of social media in the first place B) It's one more thing I would have to keep updating & posting to maintain freshness, and running a successful blog is already a lot of work; and C) I feel is would take away from, not supplement, traffic to my website.

I do admire those who are brave enough to start their own Internet forums. It's a big commitment and it can get expensive. I also kicked around the idea of having a reader forum on Off Grid Ham until I realized there are a jillion forums out there already, and most of them are ghost towns. I can't really add anything new to the universe, so the idea was vetoed.

Thanks Tevin. We do have good content, just not a lot of activity.

A lot of sites are more like chat rooms, however I did see a good thread on how to dispose of dead bodies once SHTF.  Not a subject one likes to talk about, but necessary none the less.  The "fun" talk is about weapons and survival and exciting stuff, I think reality will be more like starvation and disease though violence will certainly play a big role.

I suppose we should be starting threads an what we are up to.
I check into this net more than half the time
http://www.californiaamateurradioservice.com/
have a solar battery set up for HF, and that net got me to set it up as my primary station.

we should have a challenge here,
can you set up an off grid radio ?
can you use it weekly even thought it is stored EMP proof ?
can any of us talk to the others on the radio ?
likely all kinds of things we could do to get activity here.
to bad all my extra energy is gone from food allergies (but at least I figured it out yesterday and have hope for the future now)
we could start building new portable antennas and test them in real world conditions,
we could do lots of things if we tired
there are always more limits to push if there is some pressing reason

Maybe it's been around and I'm just too new to have seen it, but I'd love to get involved with survivalist minded hams in the Ann Arbor area.  I have some equipment but since the wife HATES wires, antennas etc, getting on the air has been a challenge except for the 2m stuff on a HT.

I am kind of new to Ham radio, but when I get on HF all the nets are BS.  Everyone is talking about something different.  Once in a while I catch someone talking about antennas and radios, but other than that nothing I am interested in.
I have tried several times to catch the AMRRON net, but never have heard anyone.
My club has a 2m net on Monday evenings, other than that a few DX stations over seas.

some of the nets will let you ask questions
some are likely boring because no one asks anything, start asking

Nets are mostly BS, but I would encourage you not to pull the plug too soon.

They are a good way to build operating experience and test how well your antennas and systems are working. It's also a good way to get to know other hams, so when you run across them again on the air there is already a familiarity. After nets are closed, a few in the group will usually hang around for informal rag chewing, kind of an amateur radio version of an after party.

So yeah, nets just for the sake of having a net is kind of lame. But the side benefits are very worthwhile.

For what it's worth, hf nets are a bit of a chore IMHO.  VHF nets are a different bowl of soup.  The participants are in reasonable distances from the repeater that serves the net.  All participants can hear both sides of the conversation.  After a while, it's nearly like a meeting at the pub, without the travel (or the pub), teasing happens with chuckles.  Essentially, it's a way to hear both long time hams and neophytes stumble, fumble and learn.   As Tevin said, hang around after the net, and ask questions, that's when the knowledge comes out.
