Good question.
For some reason parts of the ham community can be very clickish. Thats a big part of the reason this was started. It's like anything else i guess there is a cross section of people including assholes....
The reason you got so many answers is there are so many things and you have to find out what you enjoy, or what interests you.
There are still a lot of people who love CW (morse code) and do that exclusively:
www.cwops.comwww.naqcc.infoThere are people who love to build, and communicate with satellites:
www.amsat.orgSome people enjoy building radio and other kits:
www.elecraft.comwww.tentec.comwww.foxdelta.comSome enjoy contesting where there is a set of parameters and the goal is to make as many contacts and unique contacts in strange countries as you can in a set period of time for a score:
www.contesting.comwww.arrl.org/contestsOther like to operate QRP which means low power and see how many contacts they can make by using 5 watts.
www.amqrp.orgSome still yet like to take their equipment run it off of battery power in the woods and see who they can contact from the middle of no where off battery power:
www.hfpack.comThere are organized nets with different goals you can check into or listen to:
www.n1yz.com/HFNET_LIST.HTMwww.hfradio.net/nets.htmlwww.14300.netAntique type radios are still very popular tube radios:
www.vintageradio.comThere are a lot of people who just stay on vhf/uhf and play with stuff like APRS:
www.aprs.orgwww.aprs.netwww.openaprs.netSome just like to listen sometimes to shortwave broadcasts, include pirate radio, and trying to find military or intellegence agency "numbers stations"
www.spynumbers.comwww.dxing.com/pirate.htmLast some people enjoy simply "ragchewing" just chatting, and the fellowship that brings. Down in the south and I would assume Texas the 80 meter band and 40 meter band in the evenings are packed full of guys just shooting the bull.
At the end of the day, it comes down to what you enjoy, and what you want to make of it.
