SECURE Comms with Motorola iDen 900 Mhz Spread Spectrum Units
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:11:29 PM »
Someone asked on chat, last night during RoundTable, about "SECURE Comms with Motorola iDen 900 Mhz Spread Spectrum Units" and I didn't get back to them.
I wrote a Blog, over on surivialmonkey.com <http://www.survivalmonkey.com/threads/an-interesting-secure-comms-device-for-your-cn-aoo.33828/> back in 2011
that lays out the System and Features of this hardware. If, after you read the Blog, and comments, you still have questions, I am certainly willing to have a discussion
here on PH. So\, just post it here, and I will do my best to answer....

If anyone is interested, I have 8 new i355 units in the boxes and external microphones NIB for them as well. They are new/old stock that have been sitting for a few years in the warehouse. I pulled 2 out of the boxes and charged them up to make sure the batteries were still good and they charge to full. They have Sprint/NexTel SIM cards.

Clovis, What are you asking for them?  If they are cheap enough, I would buy two, and you can send the to Spacecase0, so he can see what the deal is.... Once he has a chance to use them, he can see if they make sense in his world.....

BTPost,

I have a few questions, if you dont mind:

Did you figure out if the unit-to-unit mode of the i355 could utilize the main antenna (and ultimately an external antenna)?

What hardware did you find worked best in changing the internal pop-up antenna to a connector?

Will the phone attempt to "register" with a network (such as Sprint) with, or without, a SIMM card?

Thanx,

Cindy, The i355s in DirecTalk Mode will ONLY use the Internal Antenna, and the internal Connection for an External Antenna is ByPassed, and NOT active. so No External Amp will work, using the External Antenna connection. This was verified by Motorola, when queried by a Comms Guru, who works for an Unmentionable US Military Comms Group.

The Phone will try an Register, in Phone Mode, IF it has a Simm Card. AND there is a local Network in Operation, HOWEVER without a current Active Account, it will fail to Register without an Active Account on the Network. It will NOT attempt to Register in DirecTalk Mode.....

Thanks Bruce,

Is there a different model ident that will use an external antenna connection?  Like for use with either a base or mobile antenna.

Found a iDen/ISM Guru on a different Board, who lives in Tucson, AZ.... He started doing these about the same time I started, back in '11... I signed up doe that Board and will try and get in touch with him, as he has had some success with External Antennas on only the i355.... I will post more information here and over on Survivalmonkey.com after I confirm his information..... Just say'en, I do not know everything....

Had a very ice chat with Cindy, o the Phone this morning, about these Units... and it got me thinking, about where the State of the Art was, in the Prep'er World.
Well I am happy to report the following:

Bump: Update Information on SECURE Phones...........

There is a fellow actively working on a REPEATER built from two DirecTalk Radios... He has done an extensive Reverse Engineering Job on the Units and looks to be getting close to a Working Prototype.
