NIST budget
« on: August 16, 2018, 06:25:34 PM »
There's a report, unconfirmed at this time, that the NIST is going to cut support for time measurement and reporting.  I think there is something phony about it, but the ARRL is spreading the word.

The rumor is that they are going to shut down WWV and WWVH.

I'm not sure this would be the armageddon they are talking about on other forums. These are legacy systems that have more modern replacements. Other than tradition/nostalgia, what practical/critical function does WWV serve?

Nostalgia is about it.  Moreover, it's a budget proposal, nothing cast in stone, yet.  I for one do NOT understand how the ARRL's panties are in a wad.

when you run out of money, drop non essential things.
people will not die if WWV vanishes.
I will miss the easy way to frequency calibrate my radios... but I can get my own accurate frequency reference if I really want one
and I have already changed my clocks to local apparent time anyway... so I don't need the radio time reference anymore, and if I really need one, I can use an internet one.

I am sure that some pirate radio station will pop up on 5, 10 and 15MHz to take the place
I always figured it would be the best place to find others in an apocalypse where most humans are gone, but if the stations vanish early, likely no one will try there.
