What SW receiver are you using?
« on: July 07, 2012, 09:29:26 PM »
I thought I'd toss this out for discussion.  What shortwave radio are you using?

We're setup with a Grundig Satelit 750 as a primary.   The backups are a Degen DE212 and Radio Shack DX-398.

Don't have a shortwave, as my ham radio will pick up all the shortwave bands, no need to have both.. There is a picture of my radio over in the kit build section under elecraft k3.
The more I learn, the less I know.

I use my ham rig for shortwave reception (IC-7200) and also have a Baygen Freeplay hand crank radio and a Kaito 1103 AM/SSB radio.  I've been impressed with the Kaito so far, given its fairly low cost;  it's a sensitive and selective rig and works well on both AM and SSB.

The hang cranks have been an interesting thing.. I've considered getting one seeing the power issue is resolved.

Local Radio Shack has Eton G6 Aviator that says it does "LW/Shortwave (150-29999 KHz)".  I could not find anything in the manual indicating HF ham frequencies (or CB for that matter) are excluded.  From the description, it sounds like anything in that range is tunable, but I know most of these type radios only receive specific portions of that range.  If this one or any one of similar price ($80) will tune in HF ham I may get one.  They also have FR600RDS for same price but the freq range is more limited from what I saw.

Ive been giving some serious looks at the Grundig 750, but reading mixed reviews on it.

Im also looking at a hand crank radio, but really need a bulletproof one , if one exists.

I get to play with some neet toys at work, but my budget is a bit lower at home

Anty real use reviews would be appreciated

I could never justify the purchase because my K3 and the ic-7000 both receive those frequencies. When I am mobile I bring my 7000 with me.

I think the Grundig Satellite 750 is a good low end buy for serious SW listening (such as from Universal Radio in Ohio). For affordable casual and emergency use I like the compact and portable Kaito KA500 AM/FM/Shortwave/WeatherBand unit. It offers versatile 4 way power ability, with battery, solar and hand crank, plus optional AC plug in power supply. Sells for around $50 via Amazon with free shipping. I seriously suggest acquiring at least one multi-power shortwave radio and storing it in a Faraday cage in case of an EMP attack, or even severe CME events.
To build a simple Faraday cage to protect personal electronics visit FactorReady.com and view the pdf document
EMP/CME Factors under the Downloads tab. Would also be good ideal to store a 2 meter ham HT as well as a CB radio and telephone, etc. Remember, the sun was still shining when Noah built the ark...
