Cool Shot.

What version you running? Is it working well?
Books I highly recommend:

One Second After
Under the Dome
Earth Abides
The Road
The Stand

What ever the latest version is.  On chat yesterday one of our members was telling me where to find a DSP setting in the menu system.  I told him it was actually on my screen so i posted a screen shot

As soon as I get my FT 857d set up, I want to be able to do that.

It's really easy just make sure to get the cable. I actually have a serial cable around somewhere i'd send to someone if they wanted it. It's not the USB one but the serial one.
The more I learn, the less I know.

the on off button is on there (NB),
you just need to alter the menu setting in the radio to the correct value and the people tuning up will no longer hurt your ears,
I had thought it was set like mine when I got the radio,
it puts the people tuning up to about 1/4 the volume of the voice traffic, you can still here if someone is tuning, but it will not hurt your ears or mess with a conversation.
but sadly you can't do it all through the software
